Rantz’s Rant

Time to vent. Every now and then, I venture out to message boards, make my rounds, to check out what’s going on. Very seldom to I comment on stuff, unless it’s a friends work, someone I know, or to give constructive criticism for someone who is honestly trying to learn, and do the right thing. Now, I am neither conceded, arrogant, nor condescending towards others, unless it’s in a playful manner – there are certain close friends, that we bash each other in public forums because we ARE very good friends, and we BOTH know that what we same on “;paper” is just a bunch of B.S…..although there are some people that honestly believe that there is some serious hate going on…..which is funny….hence the reason we do it….

But I digress, and back to my rant. The other day, I was skimming through on of these said forum/message boards when I ran across a post by some one, whom I admire their art – so I decided to check out the post. It was a cool image, and one where he was experimenting with different techniques, and blown out of proportion anatomy. It wasn’t one of my favorites from him, but I admired him for trying something new. I read a few of the comments, and most were focused on one particular part of the anatomy, which was again, blown out of proportion – on purpose. He thanked everyone for commenting, and posted the reason for the “error” was a “style” thing…..now this is where things take an immediate left turn, and get blown completely out of whack – and so far away from the original “sketch” that it’s not even funny. One person in particular goes on, and on, and on about how an editor would dismiss this particular drawing, and tell him that he needed to work on his anatomy…….what?!.......what the hell does an editor have to do with a sketch that was done for fun? Seriously?! This particular comment was then drove into the ground repeatedly, and the comment about the “style” was again blown completely out of proportion….and then other people starting jumping on the same band wagon – are you kidding me?! WTF?!

Now some facts:
1. This was a sketch drawn for fun
2. This particular person is a published artist that has worked for Marvel
3. The anatomy was distorted on purpose
4. No editor would EVER see this drawing as a final piece, nor would it ever be submitted as a final piece
5. did I mention it was a sketch?
6. The person making the “editor” comments can’t draw to save their soul – in which they openly admit.
7. Dismissing a comment because it is a “style” choice, and saying that it is not an excuse, totally rubs me the wrong way – STYLE is what separates us from everyone else – other wise everyone’s art would look fuggin identical!.....how stupid of a comment that is!

People on this particular forum have skewed views, and tend to point out flaws, and then dwell on them…..forEVER…..hence the reason I do not post there anymore, nor do I comment on anyone’s post, unless again, it is a friend, or one of my “sworn enemies” – LOL……

Okay – I’m done with my rant…..I guess there are just some people out there that will NEVER cease to amaze me.

I have seen the forum you refer to. Let's just say it's gone beyond a slap of the "wrist" on that board. I was lead to it by another published artist here on DA who also had issues with the way it was being handled by everyone except the creator of the piece. I agree with you. If we started dismissing every piece of art simply because we thought a "style" choice was wrong, very many comic book artists would be unemployed right now. I understand and welcome criticism if it is meant to assist in the learning process. But to totally dismiss an artist's work because of "style" is just plain ignorant. My 2 cents.
Randy, I GOTTA know the site!! ( Although I think I have an idea...)

BTW, People have lost their sense of humor. This is why they think you're our little bad-mouthing is for real. Plus, you suck! :)
harsh? really? well maybe - but when people draw stuff for FUN, and then get comments from twits about how an editor would blah, blah, blah - it is just ridiculous.....what does an editor have to do with a sketch that was drawn personally, and for fun?

Mostly comic forums - but again, rarely do I post outside of here - mainly just due to time - I don't have a lot of that as of late.
Thanx for the big tease and no link. :O

Fully agree on your tangent, People that think they can draw commenting on someone's STYLIZED SKETCH. What if someone like you or another pro were to post to some am's fully finished piece and told them they should just give it up you'll never get it! but what do I know I'm just some graphic designer/illustrator wannabe.

But my intrest is peaked to the piece mentioned

EXACTly....fuggin freak boy.....
agreed - that is why i now limit to where i go. I know there are "rules" but all artistic rules were made to broken. I am not a fan of cookie cutter art and trying to be like everyone else.

I think people should try new things and if they do not work- just move on and try something else new
